Ice Cubes in Wine – Yes or No? How to Chill Wine Without Diluting It

Ice cubes in wine – a quick solution with one drawback

Who hasn't occasionally added a few ice cubes directly to a glass of wine to cool it down? On a hot summer day, it is a quick and tempting solution. However, there is one drawback – as the ice melts, it gradually dilutes the wine and changes its taste.

If you are making a simple, refreshing wine spritzer, a few ice cubes probably won't matter. With a quality wine, however, it is a shame. Its aroma, flavour and balance – created by the grapes and the winemaker's work – deserve more careful treatment.

So, when is it OK to put ice in wine and when is it better not to?

Ice in the glass makes sense when you simply want a refreshing summer drink or a wine spritzer. But if you want to enjoy the character and flavour of a quality wine, it is better not to dilute it.

How can you chill wine without diluting it?

Use ice around the bottle – not in the wine

If you want to chill your wine quickly while preserving its original flavour, place the whole bottle in ice instead of adding ice cubes to the glass.

Ideally, fill a wine cooler with ice, add a little water and place the bottle inside. The ice water surrounds more of the bottle, helping the wine to cool more evenly. At the same time, the wine in your glass remains exactly as it should be – without water from melting ice and without unnecessary dilution of its flavour.

Which wine cooler should you choose? It depends on where and how you plan to use it. You can choose an elegant cooler for a single bottle, a stainless-steel model, or a larger cooler designed to chill several bottles at once.
